Venli is a major character in The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. A Singer (Listener) of the Shattered Plains and sister to Eshonai, Venli is a scholar whose ambition helped bring her people to ruin -- and who later becomes the first Singer Radiant of the new age, a Willshaper bonded to the spren Timbre.
Venli's arc is one of guilt, transformation, and atonement. Once driven by pride and a hunger for power that led her to embrace stormform and welcome the Voidbringers' return, she comes to seek redemption by guiding her people toward freedom rather than enslavement under Odium.
Background
Venli was a Listener scholar studying the forms her people could adopt by attuning different rhythms and bonding spren -- workform, warform, mateform, and others, the legacy of a people who had escaped Odium's control generations earlier by abandoning their gods. Ambitious and resentful of living in her sister Eshonai's shadow, Venli sought the lost forms of power, helping discover stormform, which reconnected the Listeners to Odium and summoned the Everstorm.
Biography
Words of Radiance
Venli's research into forms of power drives the Listeners toward stormform, which grants command over storms and lightning but surrenders them to Odium's influence. The adoption of stormform and the birth of the Everstorm at the Battle of Narak destroy the free Listener civilization and bring her sister Eshonai to a tragic end.
Oathbringer
Venli becomes one of the Fused's tools among the awakened Singers, taking on the role of "Voice of Lights." Yet she begins to harbor doubts and secretly bonds the spren Timbre, who is captured within her gemheart -- the seed of her becoming a Willshaper. She quietly resists the Fused even while appearing to serve them.
Rhythm of War
Venli's hidden path as a Radiant is central. Carrying Timbre and the legacy of her sister, she works in secret to protect a group of "common" singers and lead them toward true freedom -- neither enslaved by humans nor by Odium and the Fused. She begins to speak the Willshapers' Ideals and embraces her role as a bridge between her people and the Knights Radiant.
