Urithiru

From The Archmaester's Archive

Urithiru is the ancient mountain tower-city that served as the seat and stronghold of the Knights Radiant in the age before the Recreance. Rediscovered during the events of The Stormlight Archive, it became the new home and headquarters of the reborn Radiants and the coalition of nations opposing Odium. The city is a vast structure built into and atop a plateau high in the mountains at the heart of the Rosharan supercontinent, far above the reach of the highstorms.

Urithiru is a tower of immense scale, rising in tiers and ringed by ten radial sections corresponding to the ten orders of Knights Radiant. It is a fabrial of titanic proportions, regulating its own climate and atmosphere despite its great altitude.

Description

The tower contains thousands of rooms, libraries, and chambers, many decorated with strata of colored stone. At its base lies a network of basements and a great gemstone pillar -- the tower's heart -- studded with thousands of gemstones that, when properly powered, sustain Urithiru's protective and life-supporting functions. Murals, Oathgates, and ancient inscriptions throughout the city hint at the knowledge of the Knights Radiant who once dwelt there.

Oathgates

Ten Oathgates connect Urithiru to major cities across Roshar, including the Shattered Plains, Kholinar, Thaylen City, and others. These vast fabrial portals, activated by a Surgebinder turning a control sword, allow near-instant travel across the continent and make Urithiru the strategic hub of the war.

History

Built in the distant past, Urithiru was abandoned and lost after the Recreance, its location forgotten for millennia. It was rediscovered through the Oathgate hidden at the heart of the Shattered Plains. Its deeper history -- and the troubling presence dwelling within its Cognitive Realm reflection -- remained only partly understood even after its reoccupation.
