The Oathpact

From The Archmaester's Archive

The Oathpact is the ancient agreement that bound the ten Heralds to the eternal war against Odium and the Voidbringers, the keystone of Roshar's defense across the long cycle of Desolations in The Stormlight Archive. Established under the authority of the Shard Honor, the Oathpact tied the fate of humanity to the endurance of its immortal champions.

Description

Under the Oathpact, the ten Heralds served as a seal against Odium's forces. The spirits of the Voidbringers, defeated in each Desolation, were bound to the prison-world of Braize. The Heralds shared in this binding: between Desolations, they too were drawn to Braize, where the enemy tortured them. So long as the Heralds resisted and did not break, the binding held and the Voidbringers could not return to Roshar.

The Cycle of Desolations

The Oathpact thus created the grim rhythm of the Desolations. When the Heralds, under unbearable torment, finally broke and abandoned the war, the binding weakened, and the Voidbringers crossed back to Roshar to unleash another Desolation. After each cataclysm, the Heralds would return to Braize and the cycle would begin anew. The Heralds' suffering was the price of the world's protection.

The Breaking

Following a devastating Desolation, nine of the ten Heralds laid down the Oathpact and fled, leaving only Taln to bear it. With the pact effectively broken and held by a single Herald, the long-term binding of Odium's forces was compromised -- a vulnerability that would help open the way for the catastrophe of the Archive's present day.

Significance

The Oathpact is the foundation upon which Roshar's ancient defense rested, and its weakening is a root cause of the returning Desolations. Understanding the Oathpact is essential to understanding the Heralds, Braize, and the larger war against Odium.
