Sigzil is a character in The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. An Azish man and former apprentice to a Worldsinger, Sigzil is a member of Bridge Four who becomes a Windrunner of the new Knights Radiant. Educated, methodical, and worldly, he serves as the crew's clerk and rule-keeper, applying his learning and his Azish love of bureaucracy and measurement to the practical problems of a fledgling Radiant order.

Sigzil's value lies in his mind: he is the one who counts, codifies, and organizes, helping translate the chaos of war and new powers into systems the Knights Radiant can use.

Background

Sigzil was born in Azir and trained as an apprentice to a Worldsinger -- a traveler who collects and shares stories and knowledge from across Roshar and (it is hinted) beyond. This education gave him a broad, cosmopolitan perspective rare among the Alethi-dominated Bridge Four. Through circumstances he ended up enslaved and assigned to the bridge crews, where his learning quickly set him apart.

Biography

Within Bridge Four, Sigzil takes on the role of clerk and accountant, keeping records, tracking pay, and codifying the crew's growing responsibilities -- a job suited to his methodical temperament and his Azish cultural reverence for proper documentation. As Bridge Four transforms into a Radiant squad, Sigzil bonds an honorspren and becomes a Windrunner, drawing in Stormlight alongside his brothers.

His experiments to quantify Radiant abilities -- distances of Lashings, durations of Stormlight, units of measurement -- make him the order's informal scientist of Surgebinding. Over the course of the later books he rises in rank and responsibility, taking on leadership and administrative duties as the Knights Radiant grow into a true institution, eventually overseeing significant elements of the Windrunners' organization.

Character

Sigzil is studious, precise, and dependable, sometimes anxious under the weight of responsibility but unfailingly conscientious. He embodies the Azish virtues of order, documentation, and careful measurement. While less flashy than the warriors around him, his organizational gifts are essential to turning a band of former bridgemen into a functioning order of Knights Radiant.

Powers and abilities

Main article: Windrunners

As a Windrunner, Sigzil wields the Surges of Adhesion and Gravitation, using Stormlight to bind, heal, and perform Lashings. His distinctive contribution is intellectual: he works to measure and standardize Radiant abilities, bringing rigor to the understanding of Surgebinding. His honorspren bond grants him a living Shardblade.
