Drogon is the largest and fiercest of the three dragons born to Daenerys Targaryen, named in honor of her late husband, Khal Drogo. The first dragons seen in the world in over a century, Drogon and his brothers are central to Daenerys's power and to the return of magic in A Song of Ice and Fire.

Birth

Drogon hatched from a petrified dragon egg, black with red markings, when Daenerys walked into the funeral pyre of Khal Drogo with her three eggs, the maegi Mirri Maz Duur bound to the flames, and a blood sacrifice in the fire. She emerged unburned at dawn with three newborn dragons, an event that astonished the world, for dragons had been thought extinct since the last died out generations after the Dance of the Dragons.

The Black Dread Reborn

Drogon is black with scarlet streaks, and as he grows he becomes the largest and most aggressive of the three, often compared to Balerion the Black Dread, the mount of Aegon the Conqueror. Wild and willful, he is the hardest of the dragons to control. Daenerys eventually rides him, becoming the first dragonrider in over a hundred years.

Danger and Power

As the dragons grow, they become both Daenerys's greatest weapon and a peril she struggles to master. When Drogon kills a child in the fighting pits of Meereen, Daenerys is forced to chain her other two dragons, while Drogon flies free into the wild. At a climactic moment he returns, and Daenerys mounts him and is borne away on his back, leaving the question of how she will master her dragons hanging over the story.
