Khal Drogo was a powerful warlord of the Dothraki, the horse-riding people of the grasslands of Essos. His marriage to Daenerys Targaryen set in motion her transformation from frightened exile to a queen and dragonrider.
The Khal
Drogo commanded one of the largest khalasars on the Dothraki Sea, a horde of forty thousand riders and their families. He had never been defeated in battle and wore his long unbound braid, heavy with bells, as a symbol of his unbroken victories, for a Dothraki cuts his braid only in defeat.
Marriage to Daenerys
Drogo was given Daenerys in marriage by her brother Viserys, who sought a Dothraki army to retake the Iron Throne. Though the match began in fear and cruelty, Daenerys grew into her place at Drogo's side, and the khal came to love her. When she bore his unborn son, he vowed to lead his khalasar across the Narrow Sea to win the Iron Throne for their child.
Death
Drogo was wounded in a fight and the cut festered. Daenerys turned to the maegi Mirri Maz Duur, who used blood magic that left Drogo alive but mindless, and cost Daenerys her unborn son. Unwilling to leave him in that state, Daenerys smothered him and laid him on a funeral pyre, into which she walked, emerging unburned with three newborn dragons.
