The Purelake

From The Archmaester's Archive

The Purelake is a vast, shallow lake in the southern reaches of the Rosharan supercontinent, so broad that it is regarded as a region and a minor kingdom in its own right. Despite its enormous extent, the Purelake is nowhere more than a few feet deep, allowing people to walk across much of it, and its warm, clear waters teem with fish that form the basis of local life.

Geography

The Purelake stretches across a wide, flat basin, its waters kept shallow and warm year-round. Because it is so shallow, the highstorms do not disturb it as they do other bodies of water, and the lakebed is dotted with stone formations and the homes of the Purelaker people, who build at the water's edge and on islands within it.

Society

The Purelakers live a relaxed, unhurried life centered on fishing and the bounty of the lake. They are known for their easygoing temperament and their distinctive customs, regarding the various fish of the lake almost as one might regard livestock or even pets. The region's mild climate and abundant food contrast sharply with the harsher lands to the east.

Significance

The Purelake appears in The Stormlight Archive as one of the diverse regions of Roshar, illustrating the variety of cultures and environments the highstorm-shaped world produces. It is associated with the wanderings of Szeth and with the broader tapestry of Rosharan life.
