The Origin

The Origin, also called the Origin of Storms, is the mysterious place far to the east of the Rosharan supercontinent from which the highstorms are believed to come. It lies somewhere out across the eastern ocean, beyond the lands known to most Rosharans, and it holds deep religious and cosmological significance in the cultures of Roshar.

Description

Because the highstorms always blow from east to west, the peoples of Roshar look eastward toward the Origin as the source of the storms that govern their lives. The exact nature of the Origin is shrouded in mystery and myth; few have ventured far enough east to learn its secrets, and the violence of the storms near their source makes the region all but impassable.

Significance in Belief

In Vorin and other Rosharan traditions, the Origin carries spiritual weight as the wellspring of the highstorms and the Stormlight they bring. The direction of the Origin orients much of Rosharan cosmology, and the storms that issue from it are tied to Honor and the natural order of the world.

Significance

The true nature of the Origin and its connection to the highstorms, to Honor, and to the deep history of Roshar is one of the enduring mysteries of The Stormlight Archive, hinted at but not fully revealed in the cultures and lore of the world.
