The Ideals

From The Archmaester's Archive

The Ideals, also called the Immortal Words, are the sacred oaths sworn by the Knights Radiant that bind a Radiant to their Spren and unlock the progressive stages of their Surgebinding powers. Speaking and, crucially, living the Ideals is what advances a Radiant in their order and deepens the bond at the heart of their abilities in The Stormlight Archive.

The First Ideal

All Knights Radiant, regardless of order, share the First Ideal:

Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination.

This Ideal expresses the core ethos of the Radiants: to protect life, to draw on inner strength, and to value the striving of the path itself over any endpoint.

Order-Specific Ideals

Beyond the First, each order of Knights Radiant has its own sequence of additional Ideals -- generally four more, for five in total -- that reflect the values of that order. The Windrunners, for example, swear oaths centered on protecting others, including the Second Ideal: I will protect those who cannot protect themselves. The Skybreakers swear oaths of law and justice, the Edgedancers oaths of remembering the forgotten and listening, and so on. A Radiant must not merely speak an Ideal but truly come to embody it for the oath to take hold.

Mechanics

Each Ideal sworn strengthens the Nahel bond with the Radiant's Spren and grants greater command of their Surges. Failing or betraying one's oaths can damage or sever the bond -- and can kill the bonded spren, as happened catastrophically at the Recreance. The fifth and final Ideal represents the pinnacle of a Radiant's order.

Significance

The Ideals are the spiritual and mechanical engine of the Knights Radiant, uniting the moral journey of each Radiant with the growth of their power. They embody the principle that, on Roshar, the right words spoken in truth carry real and binding force.
