Sunset Sea
The Sunset Sea is the great ocean that lies to the west of Westeros, bounding the continent along its entire western coast. Its waters are largely unexplored, and what lies beyond them is one of the enduring mysteries of the world of A Song of Ice and Fire.
Geography
The Sunset Sea washes the western shores of the Westerlands, the Reach, the North, and the lands beyond the Wall. The Iron Islands, home of the ironborn, lie within it off the western coast, as do Bear Island and the Arbor, the wine-rich island of House Redwyne. No reliable account exists of any land on its far side; sailors who have ventured far west have not returned, and the open ocean stretches beyond the edge of every map.
The Ironborn
The Sunset Sea is the domain of the ironborn, the seafaring raiders of the Iron Islands who live by reaving its coasts and waters. Their longships range the sea, and their faith in the Drowned God is bound to it. In ages past the ironborn raided far up and down the western shores from these waters.
Mystery
What lies beyond the Sunset Sea is unknown. Legends speak of lands to the far west, and a few bold or doomed voyagers, such as the ironborn who sailed off in search of new realms, are said to have set out across it never to be seen again. The unexplored vastness of the Sunset Sea stands in contrast to the well-charted Narrow Sea to the east, a reminder of how much of the world remains beyond knowledge.
