Evi was the first wife of Dalinar Kholin and the mother of his sons Adolin and Renarin in Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive. A foreigner from the western land of Rira, her gentle nature stood in sharp contrast to her warlike husband, and her death became one of the defining sources of guilt in Dalinar's life.
Background
Evi came from Rira and Iri in the west of Roshar, peoples with customs and beliefs quite different from the Vorin Alethi. She married Dalinar Kholin during the wars to unify Alethkar under his brother Gavilar. Soft-spoken, devout, and uneasy with the brutality of Alethi warfare, she often pleaded for mercy and gentleness, qualities Dalinar struggled to understand in his younger, blood-soaked years.
Death at the Rift
Evi's life ended in tragedy during Dalinar's campaign against the rebellious city of Rathalas, the Rift. In an attempt to broker peace and spare lives, Evi went secretly to the Rift, but the situation collapsed, and Dalinar, in a fury, ordered the city burned. Evi died in the flames, a death Dalinar caused through his own wrath.
Legacy
Dalinar later sought to have his memories of Evi, including her very name, removed by the Nightwatcher and Cultivation, so unbearable was his guilt. The eventual return of those memories, and his confrontation with what he had done, forms a central element of his character across The Stormlight Archive. Her sons Adolin and Renarin carry her legacy forward.
