Edmure Tully is the heir and later Lord of Riverrun, son of Lord Hoster Tully and brother to Catelyn Stark and Lysa Arryn. A well-meaning but impetuous lord, his marriage at the Twins became the occasion for the infamous Red Wedding during the War of the Five Kings.
Character
Edmure is brave and generous, beloved by the smallfolk of the Riverlands, but he is prone to rash decisions. During the war he commanded Riverrun's defenses against the Lannisters and won a victory at the Battle of the Fords, though his independent action inadvertently disrupted the larger strategy of his nephew and king, Robb Stark.
The Red Wedding
To repair the alliance Robb had broken by wedding outside his pledged match, Edmure was married to Roslin Frey at the Twins. The wedding feast became a massacre: House Frey and House Bolton, in league with the Lannisters, slaughtered Robb Stark, his mother Catelyn, and much of the Northern host. Edmure was spared but taken prisoner.
Captivity
Held by the Lannisters and Freys, Edmure was used as a hostage to compel the surrender of Riverrun, then under siege and defended by his uncle Ser Brynden Tully, the Blackfish. His fate ties the once-proud House Tully to the fortunes of its enemies.
Screen note: in HBO's Game of Thrones Edmure reappears in later seasons during the retaking of Riverrun.
