Brave Companions

From The Archmaester's Archive

The Brave Companions are a sellsword company that ravaged the Riverlands during the War of the Five Kings, notorious for their cruelty and treachery. Drawn from many lands and bound by no loyalty save coin, they are more commonly known by the contemptuous name the Bloody Mummers, and to their leader's pride, the Brave Companions.

A Company of Cutthroats

The Brave Companions are a motley band of mercenaries assembled from across Essos and Westeros, a mongrel host of murderers, deserters, and the worst sort of sellswords. They take their orders from whoever pays them and switch sides without scruple. The smallfolk and lords of the Riverlands came to despise them above almost any other plague of the war, calling them the Bloody Mummers for the savagery they left in their wake.

Vargo Hoat

The company is led by Vargo Hoat, a sellsword captain from the Free City of Qohor with a slobbering lisp, a man of grotesque cruelty and ambition. Initially in the service of House Lannister through Tywin Lannister, Hoat and his company seized Harrenhal. It was Vargo Hoat who, hoping to win a ransom and protect himself, ordered the maiming of Ser Jaime Lannister, cutting off his sword hand, a betrayal that brought ruin upon himself.

Treachery and Fall

True to their nature, the Brave Companions betrayed every master in turn. When the Lannisters and the Boltons turned against them, the company was hunted down and destroyed, and Vargo Hoat met a gruesome end at the hands of the men he had wronged. The Brave Companions stand as an emblem of the lawless brutality that sellswords brought to the war-torn Riverlands.
