Brandon the Builder was a legendary hero of the Age of Heroes, credited in the songs and histories of Westeros as the founder of House Stark and the builder of its greatest works. Among the most renowned figures of the deep past, he is said to have raised the Wall itself.
Legendary Deeds
According to legend, Brandon the Builder constructed the Wall, the great barrier of ice that guards the realms of men from the dangers beyond, after the Long Night. He is also credited with raising Winterfell, the seat of House Stark, and with helping build the storm-defying castle of Storm's End for Durran Godsgrief in the Stormlands. Some tales say he sought the aid of giants and the children of the forest in his works.
Founder of House Stark
Brandon founded the line of the Kings of Winter, the Starks who ruled the North for thousands of years until Torrhen Stark knelt to Aegon the Conqueror. The name Brandon, or Bran, recurs through the generations of Starks in his honor, including Bran Stark of the present age.
Myth and History
The maesters caution that the deeds attributed to Brandon the Builder span far more time than any one man could live, and that "Brandon the Builder" may be a name attached to the works of many. Whether one man or many, he stands at the mythic root of the North and its ruling house.
