Beric Dondarrion is the Lord of Blackhaven in the Stormlands and the leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners, an outlaw band that defends the smallfolk of the war-torn Riverlands. A knight repeatedly slain and brought back to life, he is one of the most striking instances of resurrection magic in A Song of Ice and Fire.

The King's Justice

Early in the War of the Five Kings, Lord Eddard Stark, as Hand of the King, dispatched Beric Dondarrion at the head of a company to bring the king's justice to Ser Gregor Clegane, the Mountain, who was ravaging the Riverlands. Beric's company was ambushed and scattered, and Beric himself was killed. But he did not stay dead.

Resurrection

Beric rode with the red priest Thoros of Myr, who, after his death, spoke the funeral rites of R'hllor, the Lord of Light, over his body and kissed him back to life. Beric was killed again and again in the fighting that followed, and each time Thoros revived him. With every death and return, Beric lost a little more of himself, his wounds and memories carried over, becoming a gaunt, scarred figure with one eye, ever closer to the grave.

The Brotherhood

Beric came to lead the Brotherhood Without Banners, an outlaw fellowship that, in the absence of lords, took up the cause of protecting the common folk and punishing the cruel. They captured and tried Arya Stark and the Hound, and their grim faith in R'hllor and unyielding war against oppressors made them a strange power in the lawless Riverlands.
