The Trident is the great river of the Riverlands in central Westeros, named for its three principal branches, the Red Fork, the Blue Fork, and the Green Fork, which converge before flowing eastward into the Narrow Sea. It is the lifeblood of the Riverlands and the site of one of the most decisive battles in Westerosi history.

Geography

The Trident drains a vast region of fertile river country. Its forks rise in the hills and mountains to the west and north and join in a broad floodplain dotted with mills, fords, and crossings. The great castle of the Twins, held by House Frey, commands the only bridge across the Green Fork for many leagues, a strategic chokepoint that has made the Freys wealthy through tolls.

Battle of the Trident

Main article: Battle of the Trident

The river gave its name to the climactic battle of Robert's Rebellion, in which Robert Baratheon slew Prince Rhaegar Targaryen at a ford, breaking the Targaryen cause and clearing his path to the Iron Throne.

Significance

Houses sworn to the river country, including House Tully of Riverrun, are known as the lords of the Trident. Control of its crossings and tributaries is central to any campaign in the Riverlands, the strategic heart of the continent.
