The Cognitive Realm, also known as Shadesmar, is one of the three Realms that make up the structure of reality in the Cosmere, Brandon Sanderson's shared fictional universe. It is the realm of thought and perception, lying between the Physical Realm and the Spiritual Realm.

Nature

In Cosmere cosmology, all things exist simultaneously across three Realms:

  • The Physical Realm — the world of matter and ordinary experience.
  • The Cognitive Realm — the realm of thought, where things exist as they are perceived and conceived.
  • The Spiritual Realm — the realm of connection, intent, and the essential nature of all things.

In the Cognitive Realm, objects from the Physical Realm appear as lights or beads representing the soul or self-conception of each thing, and the landscape is shaped by perception rather than physical geography. Spren, the sapient forces of Roshar, are native primarily to the Cognitive Realm and cross into the Physical Realm to take on more solid form.

Shadesmar

On Roshar, the Cognitive Realm is called Shadesmar. There the seas are made of countless small beads, each the cognitive aspect of a Physical-Realm object, while the "land" corresponds to the open spaces between physical objects. Spren cities and the homelands of the various spren orders lie within Shadesmar. The Oathgate network and certain transitions allow travelers to pass between the Physical Realm and Shadesmar, and characters in The Stormlight Archive traverse it as a means of long-distance travel and as a setting in its own right.
