'''The Vale of Arryn''', often called simply the Vale, is a region in the east of [[Westeros]], a fertile valley ringed and protected by the [[Mountains of the Moon]], ruled by House [[Arryn]] from the [[Eyrie]]. Sheltered by its mountains and accessible only through narrow, well-guarded passes, the Vale is one of the most secure regions of the [[Seven Kingdoms]].

The Vale is a green and prosperous land of rivers, fields, and orchards, populated by proud Andal houses sworn to the Arryns. Its mountains are home to dangerous clansmen, descendants of the [[First Men]] driven into the heights, who raid the lowlands and prey on travelers.

== Geography ==
The Vale lies between the Mountains of the Moon, which wall it off from the [[Riverlands]] to the west and the rest of the continent. The chief entrance is the Bloody Gate, a fortress guarding the high road through the mountains, beyond which lie the waycastles and the Giant's Lance crowned by the Eyrie. The valley floor is watered and fertile, and the port of Gulltown on the eastern coast is the Vale's principal harbor and only city.

Major holdings include the Eyrie and the Gates of the Moon (House Arryn), Runestone (House Royce), the Bloody Gate, Gulltown (House Grafton), and the Three Sisters islands offshore.

== History ==
The Vale was one of the first regions conquered by the [[Andals]] when they crossed the [[Narrow Sea]], and House Arryn, of pure Andal descent, established itself as Kings of Mountain and Vale. After [[Aegon I Targaryen|Aegon's Conquest]], to which the Vale submitted when its young king's mother knelt rather than see him burned, the Arryns became Lords Paramount of the Vale.

== In the story ==
The Vale stays largely aloof from the [[War of the Five Kings]], its forces kept idle by the fearful and unstable [[Lysa Arryn]]. After Lysa's death at the hands of [[Petyr Baelish|Littlefinger]], the Vale becomes the stage for his scheming as Lord Protector, and the hidden refuge where [[Sansa Stark]] is concealed under the name Alayne. The lords of the Vale, chafing under Littlefinger's control, grow restless, and the Vale's untouched strength looms as a reserve that may yet tip the wars of Westeros.

== Inhabitants ==
The lords of the Vale are sworn to House Arryn and pride themselves on their ancient Andal blood and chivalry. Houses Royce, Corbray, Waynwood, Redfort, and others hold its castles. The mountain clans, the Stone Crows, Black Ears, Moon Brothers, and more, dwell wild in the heights.
