The '''Rohirrim''', "the Horse-lords", were the people of [[Rohan]], a race of Men renowned above all for their horsemanship and their cavalry. Calling themselves the Eorlingas, the sons of Eorl, they dwelt in the green plains of the Mark and were the steadfast allies of [[Gondor]].

== Origins ==
The Rohirrim were descended from the Éothéod, a Northern people of Men akin to the folk who dwelt in the upper vales of the [[Anduin]]. In the year 2510 of the Third Age, their chieftain Eorl the Young rode south with a great host to the aid of Gondor at the Battle of the Field of Celebrant. In reward for this deliverance, the Steward Cirion granted them the land of Calenardhon, which became Rohan.

== Culture ==
The Rohirrim were a proud, courageous, and somewhat plainspoken people, ruled by a line of kings descended from Eorl and seated at the golden hall of Meduseld in Edoras. They loved horses above all things and bred the finest steeds in Middle-earth, including the mearas, the great horses of which Shadowfax was chief. Their tongue and customs recalled those of the ancient North, and their songs and burial-mounds spoke of a heroic, horse-bound way of life.

== The War of the Ring ==
At the time of the War of the Ring, Rohan was ruled by King Théoden. Roused from the spell of his counsellor Gríma Wormtongue by [[Gandalf]], Théoden led his people to victory at the Battle of the Hornburg at Helm's Deep. Honouring the ancient alliance, the Rohirrim then rode to the aid of Gondor, arriving at the Pelennor Fields in the city's darkest hour. There Théoden fell, but his niece Éowyn and the hobbit Meriadoc slew the Witch-king, and the charge of the Rohirrim turned the tide of the battle.
