New page

Meereen is the largest and northernmost of the three great slaver cities of Slaver's Bay on the eastern continent of Essos, the others being Astapor and Yunkai. An ancient city built upon the ruins of the old Ghiscari empire, Meereen is famed for its towering, many-colored brick pyramids and its harsh culture of slavery, in which the great masters wear tokeloshe and dispose of human lives as property.

Meereen becomes the seat of Daenerys Targaryen's rule in Essos, the place where the conqueror queen halts her march to learn the harder art of governing the cities she has freed.

Geography
Meereen stands at the mouth of the river Skahazadhan on the northern shore of Slaver's Bay. Its skyline is dominated by stepped pyramids of colored brick, the largest of which, the Great Pyramid, rises hundreds of feet and becomes Daenerys's residence. The city is ringed by great brick walls, and a fighting pit and slave markets lie within. Outside the walls stretch the parched hinterlands of the bay, and across the water lie Astapor and Yunkai.

A bronze harpy long stood atop the Great Pyramid as the city's emblem, and the Sons of the Harpy, a shadowy resistance of the slaver class, take their name from it.

History
Meereen, like its sister cities, was built upon the bones of Old Ghis, the first great empire of Essos, destroyed long ago by Valyria. The Ghiscari rebuilt their civilization around the slave trade, and Meereen grew rich and cruel on the buying and selling of human beings, including the fighting slaves trained for its pits and the bed slaves of its pleasure houses.

In the story
After freeing the slaves of Astapor and Yunkai, Daenerys Targaryen takes Meereen by guile and storm, crucifying the great masters in retribution for the slave children they had nailed up along her road. Rather than march on, she remains to rule Meereen and to try to hold together the freedom she has won, contending with the insurgency of the Sons of the Harpy, the threat of war with the slaver powers, and a deadly bloody flux. Meereen becomes the testing ground of Daenerys's queenship, where her dragons grow wild and dangerous and where suitors, sellswords, and envoys gather around her.
