Drogo was given Daenerys in marriage by her brother [[Viserys Targaryen|Viserys]], who sought a Dothraki army to retake the [[Iron Throne]]. Though the match began in fear and cruelty, Daenerys grew into her place at Drogo's side, and the khal came to love her. When she bore his unborn son, he vowed to lead his khalasar across the [[Narrow Sea]] to win the Iron Throne for their child.<br />

Drogo was wounded in a fight and the cut festered. Daenerys turned to the maegi Mirri Maz Duur, who used blood magic that left Drogo alive but mindless, and cost Daenerys her unborn son. Unwilling to leave him in that state, Daenerys smothered him and laid him on a funeral pyre, into which she walked, emerging unburned with three newborn dragons.<br />
