New page

Ithilien is a region of Gondor lying east of the river Anduin, between the river and the Mountains of Shadow (the Ephel Dúath) that wall off Mordor. Once the fairest and most cultivated province of Gondor, a garden-land of woods, streams, and sweet-smelling herbs, Ithilien became a debated and dangerous borderland as the shadow of Mordor lengthened, abandoned by most of its people yet still defended by the Rangers of Gondor. Its name means the Moon-land, after the old city of Minas Ithil that once stood on its eastern edge.

Ithilien is the country through which Frodo and Sam pass on their way to Mordor, and where they meet Faramir, Captain of Gondor and brother of Boromir.

Geography
Ithilien lies between the Anduin in the west and the Ephel Dúath in the east, divided into North and South Ithilien. It is a green and lovely land, even in its abandonment, with running waters, groves of trees, and many fragrant and flowering plants, tamarisk, terebinth, and sweet herbs. The old road of Gondor runs through it toward the Cross-roads and on to the pass of Minas Morgul. The Rangers of Ithilien keep a secret refuge behind a waterfall, Henneth Annûn, the Window of the Sunset, from which they watch the roads and harry the enemy.

History
Ithilien was a populous and well-tended province in the days of Gondor's strength, and on its eastern border stood Minas Ithil, the Tower of the Moon, one of the chief cities of the realm. When the Nazgûl took Minas Ithil and made it Minas Morgul, the Tower of Sorcery, Ithilien became a perilous march. Its people gradually withdrew across the Anduin, and the province was left to the keeping of the Rangers, who maintained a watch and a resistance against the orcs and the forces of Mordor that crossed its lands.

In the story
Crossing Ithilien on their road to Mordor, Frodo and Sam are taken by Faramir and his Rangers and brought to the secret refuge of Henneth Annûn. There Faramir, unlike his brother Boromir, proves his quality by refusing the One Ring and aiding the hobbits on their way. Ithilien also witnesses the Rangers' ambush of an army of Southrons, where Sam sees a fallen enemy and wonders at the man behind the foe. After the War of the Ring, Ithilien is healed and resettled, and Faramir, made Prince of Ithilien by King Aragorn, dwells there with his wife Éowyn.
