New page

The Faith Militant were the military orders of the Faith of the Seven, the dominant religion of Westeros. Outlawed for nearly three centuries, the orders were revived during the War of the Five Kings to enforce the will of the Faith by force of arms.

The Two Orders
The Faith Militant comprised two orders. The Warrior's Sons were an order of knights, highborn and anointed, who wore rainbow cloaks and silver armor inlaid with crystal and bore swords for the defense of the Faith. The Poor Fellows were a far larger, humbler order of common men, armed with axe and cudgel, who guarded pilgrims and the faithful on the roads; they were called Stars and Swords for their badges.

Suppression
In the early days of Targaryen rule the Faith Militant rose in rebellion against the crown over the dynasty's incestuous marriages and the deaths of septons. The wars were bloody, and it was King Maegor I and later Jaehaerys I who finally broke and disbanded the orders, the Faith agreeing to lay down its arms in exchange for royal protection.

Revival
During the War of the Five Kings, with the crown deep in debt and the realm in chaos, Queen Cersei Lannister permitted the High Septon to rearm the Faith Militant in exchange for forgiveness of crown debts. The newly armed Faith, led by the austere High Sparrow, soon turned its zeal against the highborn, seizing and imprisoning members of the court, including the queen herself.
