New page

Edoras is the capital of Rohan and the seat of its kings, a fortified hill-town in a valley of the White Mountains in Middle-earth. Crowning the hill stands Meduseld, the Golden Hall, the great mead-hall of the Kings of the Mark, whose roof, thatched with gold, shines from afar. Edoras is the heart of the realm of the Horse-lords and the place where the fate of Rohan turns during the War of the Ring.

Edoras was built by the Rohirrim in the early days of their kingdom and has been the dwelling of their kings ever since. It is a stronghold of timber and turf rather than stone, fitting a people who love the open plains and their horses.

Geography
Edoras stands upon a green hill rising alone in the mouth of a valley among the northern slopes of the White Mountains (the Ered Nimrais), watered by the stream called Snowbourn. The town is ringed by a dike and a high wall of timber, with a single gate, and a paved path climbs between barrows, the burial mounds of the kings, white with the flowers called simbelmynë, evermind. At the summit stands Meduseld, the Golden Hall, where the king holds court, its great doors and carved pillars and high seat the heart of Rohan's life.

History
Edoras was raised by Brego, son of Eorl the Young, the second king of Rohan, who completed the Golden Hall of Meduseld. From Edoras the line of the kings of the Mark ruled the Riddermark, and the barrows below the hill received them in death, two long rows of green mounds marking the generations of kings.

In the story
When Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli come to Edoras, they find King Théoden aged and ensnared by the whispering counsel of Gríma Wormtongue, agent of Saruman. Gandalf casts off Wormtongue's spell and restores the king, who takes up his sword and rouses his people to war. From Edoras the people are sent to the refuge of Dunharrow and the warriors ride to Helm's Deep and later to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. After the War of the Ring, Théoden is borne back to Edoras and laid in a new barrow among the kings, and Éomer rules the Mark from the Golden Hall.
