== Nature ==
Cryptics are native to the [[Cognitive Realm]], Shadesmar, where they appear as intricate, shifting patterns of lines and symbols. In the [[Physical Realm]] a bonded Cryptic typically manifests as a pattern of moving geometric lines, often perceived on a surface or in the air, and is frequently referred to simply as "Pattern" by its bonded human. Cryptics are fascinated by lies and by the constructed truths of fiction and art.

== Society ==
In Shadesmar, the Cryptics maintain their own society and city, governed by a structure of debate and consensus. They are cautious about bonding, both because of the danger to themselves and because of the lingering memory of the Recreance, when the Knights Radiant abandoned their oaths and killed their spren. A Cryptic that bonds a human and is then betrayed becomes a "deadeye," a lifeless husk, as happened on a great scale during the Recreance.

== The Lightweavers ==
Through their [[Nahel bond]] with humans, Cryptics grant the Surges of Illumination and Transformation, making their bonded Radiants Lightweavers, able to craft illusions of light and sound and to Soulcast. The Lightweavers' oaths are unusual in that they are personal truths the Radiant must confront rather than fixed Ideals, a fitting nature for spren so concerned with truth and lies.
