== Background ==
Celebrían was born in Middle-earth in the Second Age, the only child of [[Galadriel]], the Noldorin princess, and [[Celeborn]], the Sindarin lord, uniting two of the noblest Elven lineages. She was wedded to [[Elrond]] Half-elven, the Lord of [[Rivendell]], and dwelt with him in the Last Homely House. To them were born twin sons, Elladan and Elrohir, and a daughter, [[Arwen]] Undómiel, the Evenstar of her people, who would one day wed [[Aragorn]].

== The disaster in the mountains ==
In the year 2509 of the Third Age, Celebrían journeyed from [[Rivendell]] to visit her mother in [[Lothlórien]]. While crossing the passes of the Misty Mountains, her company was waylaid by Orcs. Celebrían was captured, carried off, and subjected to torment and a poisoned wound. Her sons Elladan and Elrohir pursued the Orcs, rescued her, and brought her home, and [[Elrond]] healed her body of its hurts.

But the shadow of her ordeal could not be lifted. Though her wounds were cured, Celebrían had lost all delight in Middle-earth, and the memory of her torment robbed her of peace. The following year she passed over the Sea to the Undying Lands, seeking the healing that Middle-earth could no longer give, leaving behind her husband and children.

== Legacy ==
Celebrían's departure was a grief that lay long upon [[Elrond]] and his children. Her sons Elladan and Elrohir conceived an undying hatred of Orcs for what had been done to their mother, and rode often with the [[Dúnedain]] Rangers to hunt them. The promise of reunion with Celebrían in the Undying Lands was part of what awaited [[Arwen]] had she chosen the fate of the Elves; in choosing mortality and [[Aragorn]], Arwen accepted lasting separation from her mother, one of the sorrows of her choice.

Celebrían is a figure of gentle tragedy, an Elf-lady whose spirit was broken not by death but by cruelty, and who sought across the Sea the healing denied her in Middle-earth. Her story underscores the deep griefs that the long defeat against the Shadow inflicted even upon the great and the fair.
