New page

Athelas, also known as kingsfoil and asëa aranion, is a healing herb of Middle-earth in The Lord of the Rings. Brought to the land long ago by the Númenóreans, it is a plant of sweet and wholesome scent whose leaves, when crushed and steeped in hot water, can refresh the weary and, in the right hands, work powerful healing. By the time of the War of the Ring, it was little regarded by the common folk, who knew it as a roadside weed called kingsfoil and did not value its virtues.

The herb's potency is tied to old lore and, in particular, to the hands that use it, for there was an ancient saying in Gondor that "the hands of the king are the hands of a healer."

Description and use
Athelas grows in the wild, often where the Men of the West of old had dwelt. Its leaves give off a living freshness when bruised, and an infusion made from them clears the air, lifts the spirits, and aids recovery. In ordinary use it can soothe weariness and minor hurts, but its full healing power is drawn out only by one of great virtue and rightful authority.

In the narrative
Athelas appears at several pivotal moments. Aragorn uses it to ease Frodo after he is stabbed by a Morgul-blade at Weathertop, slowing the spread of the deadly wound until Frodo can reach Rivendell.

Its most celebrated use comes after the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in The Return of the King, when Aragorn enters the Houses of Healing in Minas Tirith. There he calls for athelas and uses it to draw Éowyn, Faramir, and Merry back from the deathly shadow of the Black Breath. The herb's sudden efficacy in his hands is taken by the people as a sign that the rightful king has returned, fulfilling the old prophecy.

Significance
Athelas links the theme of healing to the theme of rightful kingship in The Lord of the Rings. The herb that the common folk dismiss as a weed becomes, in the hands of Aragorn, proof of his royal lineage and a means of saving lives at a desperate hour, embodying Tolkien's idea that true kingship is shown in the power to heal rather than only to command.
