Skybreakers

From The Archmaester's Archive

The Skybreakers are one of the ten orders of Knights Radiant, devoted to law, justice, and the keeping of oaths, wielding the Surges of Gravitation and Division. They are associated with the Herald Nale (Nalan), who remained active long after the Recreance and secretly perpetuated the order. The Skybreakers bond highspren.

Surges

Skybreakers command the Surges of Gravitation and Division. Gravitation, shared with the Windrunners, allows them to manipulate gravity and to fly through Lashings. Division grants the power of decay and destruction, burning or degrading materials, releasing destructive energy that can char and break what it touches.

Ideals

Where most orders swear sequential Ideals of escalating personal meaning, the Skybreakers are distinctive: after the shared First Ideal, a Skybreaker swears their Second Ideal as a commitment to a code or law, then must choose and dedicate themselves to a specific legal authority or guiding principle to follow. Their oaths center on justice and the rule of law, and the order debates fiercely what true justice and law require.

Spren

Skybreakers bond highspren, Spren that embody law and right. Highspren are exacting and demanding, slow to bond and severe in their expectations, reflecting the order's rigorous character.

Notable Members

The Herald Nale led and rebuilt the Skybreakers in secret through the long centuries after the Recreance. Szeth, the former Assassin in White, comes into the order's orbit during the Archive as he seeks a lawful purpose for his deadly skills.

Significance

As the order of law and justice, and the one order that quietly survived through the centuries via Nale, the Skybreakers offer a striking counterpoint to the protector ethos of the Windrunners and raise hard questions about justice in the war against Odium.
