Robert Arryn is the young and sickly Lord of the Eyrie, Defender of the Vale, and Warden of the East, the only son of the late Lord Jon Arryn and his wife Lysa, sister to Catelyn Stark. A frail and coddled child, he is a pawn in the schemes that swirl around the Vale.
A Sickly Child
Robert, called Sweetrobin, is weak and prone to shaking fits. His mother Lysa kept him secluded in the Eyrie, the near-impregnable castle high in the Mountains of the Moon, and indulged him to the point of ruin, still nursing him well past infancy. His favorite punishment for those who displease him is to make them "fly" through the Moon Door, a hole in the floor of the high hall that opens onto a sheer drop.
The Vale's Schemes
After Lord Jon Arryn's death, his widow Lysa brought the boy back to the Eyrie and kept the Vale neutral during the War of the Five Kings. When Lysa wed Petyr Baelish, Littlefinger, he soon became the power behind the throne. After Lysa's death, Baelish made himself Robert's protector and Lord of the Vale in all but name, ruling through the fragile boy.
In the Story
Robert's weakness and Littlefinger's guardianship make the boy lord a figure of leverage. Baelish shelters Sansa Stark in the Vale under a false name and grooms her in the politics of the realm while ostensibly serving as Robert's protector.
